The Easter Triumph

Year 2001 Cast

By the time Jesus of Nazareth had reached his 33rd year, many people had heard of His incredible deeds. He had preached to the multitudes, healed a great many people, and performed many miracles.

When the people of Jerusalem heard He was coming to their city, they greeted Him with palm branches and shouted, "Hosanna!" Many spread their garments on the road before him, for they knew He was the prophet written about in the scriptures.

While in Jerusalem, Jesus taught in the temple and warned the people of the hypocrisy of the Bible scholars. He drove out the money changers and dove sellers there, telling everyone who had gathered that these practices had turned His house of prayer into a den of robbers. He chastised the Pharisees and Bible scholars, who wanted contributions to count as the way to heaven. These scholars and priests began plotting His death.
At the Passover meal, Jesus told his disciples that He would be leaving them soon. He named Judas as His betrayer. At this meal, Jesus instituted the rite of Holy Communion, where followers would eat bread and drink wine in remembrance of Jesus' sacrifice of His body and His blood for their sins.
After the supper, Jesus and the disciples went to the garden at Gethsemane where Jesus prayed that He might be able to bear his suffering. He told the Father, "If this cannot pass by without My drinking it, Your will be done." An angel appeared to give him strength.
While they were in the garden, Judas arrived and betrayed Jesus' identity to the soldiers by kissing Him. A crowd, led by the soldiers, rushed forward to arrest Jesus.
Jesus was tried and the High Priests said He must be killed for claiming to be a king. Pontius Pilate, however, did not find Jesus guilty of anything. He ordered Jesus beaten and ridiculed, thinking the crowd would be appeased. They were not, however, and they demanded that Jesus be crucified.
Jesus was nailed to a cross. Two thieves were placed next to Him. Mary, his mother, Mary from Magdela, and John, a disciple, were there with him. When the soldiers nailed Him to the cross, Jesus said, "Father, forgive them; they don't know what they are doing."
"My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" Jesus languished on the cross and finally gave up His spirit. Darkness came over the whole county and the sun stopped shining. The curtain in the temple was torn in two, and the earth shook. When the captain of the guards saw how Jesus had given up his spirit, he said, "This man certainly was the Son of God."
Three days later, the women who had come to anoint Jesus' body discovered the empty tomb. Angels appeared before them and said Jesus was not there. He had risen from the dead, just as He said He would.
When the prophesies that had been written had been fulfilled, Jesus told his followers to make disciples of all nations and to baptize them. Then, He ascended into heaven to be with the Father. His disciples continued to spread His Word, and Christianity, based on this knowledge that Jesus died to save us from our sins, has grown and flourished.
